ffmpegX or no X not working

ok. just want to convert wmv to mov. ffmpegX just does not work. after installation of the binaries mplayer, etc. the thing opens but when i drag a wmv file over it says unrecognized and only 3 of the codecs encode anything at all. except there is no audio.
so i said fcuk it. and installed the ffmpeg command line from scratch. took a lot of effort and libraries and whatnot.
now using ffmpeg to convert wmv to mov, including getting off the default 200k bit rate i get a distorted audio. like badly distorted. since all i want do is converting wmv to mov the time i've spent on this shows me that ffmpeg is, for the lack of a better way to put it, best described in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AyVh1_vWYQ.

Try a forum search. You'll find suggestions from users that have this solved for many WMVs, DRM'ed ones excepted.
