On one of my PC's (Windows XP SP3) I am unable to get anything to play video. I get the audio but nothing else.

Initially I was using WMP, and I figured that I must have either forgotten to load a codec so I switched over to VLC Media Player (which I thought would play anything without the codecs) and it also has the same deal. The player will play the audio portion of the file (MKV) but not the video portion. I can play DVD's on it with WMP and VLC but not the MKV's. I also used Media Home Player Classic, but it too does the same thing, audio but not video. I was thinking of going on a mass uninstalling/reinstalling binge to see if a codec is corrupted, but I thought I might ask here first if anyone had seen this. I searched but didn't come up with anything (at least for VLC).

    Reinstall DirectX:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...a-9b6652cd92a3

If that doesn't help reinstall WMP, this will fix any overlay or acceleration problems.

Your asking about "mkv" with not enough information to determine the fault

Try gspot or mediainfo to determine internal information before making any system changes and post findings

Well I finally got a moment to work on this. I think it was related to the video card drivers. It's an ATI Radeon 3650 AGP. I was having problems getting any of the download-able drivers from ATI's site to recognize the hardware. There was an AGP hotfix that set the video card back to ATI Radeo 2600. When I reinstalled from the original disc that came with the board and then used the latest driver that seems to have taken care of it. At least so far.
