AVI to DVD: Audio turns out pitched, as in too slow, after converting

I'm trying to create a DVD out of an AVI file using DVD Flick and ImgBurn but the sound turns out pitched down, causing the sound to be very slow and deep.

Codec: DX50, DivX 5.1.1 (Maupiti), MPG4 (Codecs are NOT Installed)
Length: 1:40:30
Size: 1.29 GB

The settings in DVD Flick I've tried

Project settings/General:
Target size: DVD (4.3 GB)
Encoder priority: Below normal
Thread count: 1

Project settings/Video:
Target format: NTSC-film
Encoding profile: Normal
Target bitrate: Auto fit
Audio modification: 100% and 50% (the sound in the origial AVI is a bit loud)
Channel count: Auto and Stereo
Bitrate: Auto and 128 kbit/s

Project settings/Burning:
Create ISO image.

No menu.
Everything else has been the standard settings.

Why does the audio change the way it does when I create the DVD? I've played the ISO and the VOB files in VLC with the same result, while the sound in the AVI plays just fine.

It looks okey so probably something with the source. I would just try another free dvd converter like avstodvd, favc and see if it works any better.

The exact same thing happened when I tried avstodvd. I don't know what to try next, since the problem seems to be with the source AVI and it takes far too long to keep trying different programs.

Is it a good idea to create VOB's with just the video parts and add try to add the audio separately? I mean so that I won't have to wait another 2-3 hours just to see if it works.

Not "VOB" files, but mpeg video.

And yes, converting audio is much faster than video, only a few minutes per hour of audio.

Try eg ffmpeggui, which should produce a DVD-compatible AC3 from the AVI.
-- EDIT: from your error output, seems that won't work.

Then use an authoring app to combine the MPEG and AC3.
Eg, GuiForDVDAuthor.

If not, then there really is something weird with your AVI.
Try extracting the audio, eg with VirtualDub, or Avidemux.

Should be fixable, eg with an audio editor like Audacity, but you'd need to spend a while to learn the ropes.

Okay. I converted the audio with ffmpeggui and replaced the AVI audio track with the new one in DVD Flick. I'll leave it over the night and perhaps it will be look good tomorrow, or the fight will continue.

Have you installed a decent audio directshow decoder? Like, i.e., ffdshow (stable releases)?

There is surely something weird about your AVI audio stream, because AVStoDVD tried:

1. to use DirectShowSource to access audio stream, failed -> shifted to FFMpegSource
2. to encode with Aften, failed -> shifted to ffmpeg -> null output

The over-night project worked out just fine.

I hadn't installed a decent audio directshow decoder, as far as I'm aware, but ffmpeggui managed to do the trick. What does ffmpeggui have that the DVD tools I used doesn't?
