Could you clarify what you mean by "the other ones I put on there"?

I've been able to play Xvid AVIs with no problems for years, both from a USB stick and a DVD+RW. Does it play some AVIs but not others?

AVI is a container. A logical "box" that can contain video and audio compressed (or not) with any of a number of codecs. The Philips players only support a few video codecs like Divx and Xvid. They do not support many others like MJPEG, DV, and uncompressed RGB. Use MediaInfo or GSpot to determine what codecs are used in your AVI files.
