I have not run a page file or indexing for years because they are huge resource hogs

I just started back running system restore since I got a quad core

I just upgraded from MyMovies 2 to MyMovies 3 and searching for movies in my catalog turned painfully slow

I have reinabled indexing on my system for just my music and my movies and the indexer found 22,600 items, hopefully this solves my issue

How many ppl here run system restore, indexing and page files?

Edit: Yep, that did the trick

No Indexing. No page file on machines with 4 GB, some with 2 GB. XP Pro SP3.

  4. No system restore. I use Ghost.

My page file is fixed at 3 GB (RAM is 2 GB). The only time I've experienced a slow-down in Win7 was when I was batch processing about 20 large audio files in Audition. I really need to upgrade to 4 GB RAM. Even if I had that, I would still leave the page file enabled. (note: this is on my early '08 MBP, not the desktop PC in my profile)

In my XP installs I had always disabled indexing. However, I decided to see how well Win7's indexing works. I notice no problems. I even set it to index the whole drive. Considering both the Start menu and Windows Explorer windows now have search boxes, I have found it much more convenient to type the name of what I'm looking for than to navigate to it manually. It's pretty quick too (though not as quick as Spotlight in OS X).

Yes to system restore, but no indexing. The OS drive is also cloned. Fixed size page file on another hard drive.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
