I have a DVD folder on the hard drive, didn't rip by myself. I am using AutoMKV to convert to x264.
When having VTS_01_1.VOB as input this happens:
When instead selecting VTS_01_0.IFO I get this:Code:19:50:15 0.98.4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - START JOBS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 19:50:15 Selected Input file: O:\Ray Charles\VTS_01_1.VOB 19:50:15 Selected Output dir: D:\temp\ 19:50:15 Selected Final Name: VTS_01_1 19:50:15 Selected Container type: MKV 19:50:15 Selected Encoder: X264 19:50:15 Selected Size: Unlimited File Size 19:50:15 Selected Profile: Constant_Quality_CQ_Optimized.xml 19:50:15 Selected Resizer: NONE / Original 19:50:15 Selected Filters: RemoveGrain(mode=2) 19:50:15 Selected Deinterlacer: Safe 19:50:15 Selected Field Order: AUTO 19:50:15 Manual Crop Enabled 19:50:15 Left Crop: 6 19:50:15 Top Crop: 2 19:50:15 Right Crop: 4 19:50:15 Botton Crop: 2 19:50:15 NeroAACEnc.exe: not present 19:50:15 Enabled Constant Quality With Unlimited Size (Q 20) 19:50:15 Activate PGC Ripping: 1 19:50:15 Track Language 1: 80: AC3 2/0 224 19:50:15 Audio Codec 1: Copy Original 19:50:15 Track Language 2: NONE 19:50:15 Audio Codec 2: Coding Tech. Thread: Break! File not supported!

You said you didn't rip the dvd itself, if you open the vob file in Powerdvd, or such does the time counter say on zero while playing the file?
Does it have to be Powerdvd? In mpchc the time counter works all right. I have also made an iso with imgburn and then reripped with dvd decrypter to see if it had anything to do with a encryption still present. No progress.
The DVD you made, try making an mkv file using makemkv and see if it fails as well.
That works but converting to x264 after that fails as before.
try running the ripped dvd through dvd shrink.
Not helping
Trying Handbrake, it's encoding now. But ETA ~7 hours for 80 minutes video??
Nope, staxrip gave me this after some encoding:
