Anyway, the ability to play VCD depends on the firmware. If your player doesn't support VCD, you'll need to get firmware that supports it. It is extremely unlikely that the manufacturer will make this change or that someone will make hacked software to support VCD.

Unfortunately it looks like the 370 doesn't support VCD's. Which is a bit of a surprise, because it DOES support many other formats!
You could always rip the VCD to your hard disk, then re-author to DVD. Probably get about 3 or 4 VCD's onto 1 DVD disk (at normal VCD quality).

It's not a surprise to me. From what I've seen most BluRay players don't support VCD and SVCD at all, although they could easily do so. There certainly are BluRay players that will play VCD and SVCD, but most of the models I've seen from the major manufacturers don't support those formats. I guess they regard them as being too "low defintion" for consumers to want.

Yes, the chipsets inside just about every BluRay player can do VCD/SVCD, but they're not supported via the firmware. I wonder why.
Is it because the manufacturers don't want low quality to besmirch their HQ credentials, or is is to cynically try to force VCD disk owners to upgrade to BD?

My guess is the first reason. VCDs were never officially released in the USA by the movie industry and its essentially a hobbyist format here. Same for SVCDs. Since everyone in the USA only thinks about how things are in the USA and maybe by extension Canada, I can see a company not spending time on the firmware to support VCD/SVCD because "nobody has those discs in North America".
