Wordpress Static Home Page

Does anyone recall a user guide which, I vaguely recall Baldrick posted quite a while back, showing a cool way to configure any html code to be the static wordpress home page?

I recall the general process was to place some php code in front of any html template file, save the file as a php file and upload to the wordpress theme template folder on the server.

Then you can select the template in the writing post or page area and save and the result will be a custom static home page for the wordpress site.

If anyone recalls the guide would you please post the link.
