Divx Plus HD problems

Hi all, I hope someone can help me out. I have been using Divx and Converter for years, it doesn't have all the options but for me it did all I wanted. I started using the x264 option with the first release of version 7 and all was good. But with the latest releases, i get quite bad quality during fast moving sequences. It looks like I only get like the top (or bottom) half of a frame, it looks quite jagged and totally unwatchable.

I am using only defaults in the converter. I've tried a bunch of different players but none have made any difference.

If someone has some ideas, please let me know cause it's driving me mental!!!!

Are you talking about tearing? Where part of what you see is from one frame and part is from another? Usually with an obvious horizontal tear that tends to move up and down the frame? Like the sample image in this post: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic350168.html#1842299 It's also possible to get multiple tears.

Here's a screen shot. I haven't changed the way I convert between the versions.

You simply have interalced video. Either deinterlace before encoding or use a deinterlacer (and don't resize the video before encoding) during playback.

With interlaced video each frame contains two half pictures, or fields, intended to be viewed one at a time, not both at the same time.

Has divx changed how they deal with interlaced video? I haven't changed either the way I decrypt or encode?

Colin - STOP right now using Divx Converter. It's crap. It was designed for idiots. I'm NOT calling you an idiot for using it, but it was designed for people who are barely beyond being living vegetables to use. That's why it has no user configurable options. Just download and install Dr. Divx. You'll get much better control over the process. If you are smart enough to post here than you are smart enough to use Dr. Divx.

If you don't want to stop using Divx Converter then I'm just going to be blunt. You might as well never post here again because there is really nothing we can do to help you if you insist on using it.

I hear u, I had been only using Dr. Divx, but development hasn't kept up with the codec. I'm testing out MeGui & Handbrake, but I've got a bunch of backups to get through before I can switch over.

I presumed this was an interlacing issue, but I just thought it was a bit odd that a process that was fairly reliable (if not the highest quality) had changed between versions.

Ah, so the Doc doesn't work with the newest release (I haven't upgraded past version 6 for a variety of reasons). Well the following link might be of use to you

It's all command line, but at least it would give you some control over the process, unlike Divx Converter where it makes all the decisions for you, good or bad.

Maybe your previous videos weren't interlaced?
