    My Consumer Electronics.
That was announced back in July or August.

They wanted a "name" like Bing or NASA -- apparently they like rodents.
And yes, it is "myce" that sounds like the word "mice"

CDFreaks is very 1990s. When's the last time you burned a CD?
The dangers of naming yourself into a corner.
Remember VCDHelp? DVDrHelp? That was a pickle here, too.

"Freaks" was also a bit against the demographic they seek -- it also attracted a lot of immature 'net trolls.
Joe Bob in his 40s isn't likely to go to a "freaks" site for legitimate advice.
Pros won't touch it with a 10-foot mouse.

  3. the only thing i used their site for was for info on cd/dvd burner hacked bios's. so the cdfreaks name was fairly appropriate. now....

yeah i guess i should probably update the name of my bookmark for this site from vcdhelp, but that's how i think of it. it's just a name.

They could've changed the name without such a radical alteration of the layout, though. Sometimes, an "improvement" isn't. (Yeah, I know, I'm an old, resistant-to-change fuddy-duddy, but on the other hand, when something works, why mess with it?)

They've done some heavy mods to vB, it seems. It's very drab now. Sterile, in fact.

    @ minidv2dvd : thanks for the warning.

    MHO:

    I liked cdfreaks.

    Now MyCE sucks — definitely.

Why does it suck? Geez, the content is the same IMHO I see no changes just because of a name change. The members there still provide good information on dvd burners....but then again I am a dvd whore!

It's not just a change of name. Maybe you have a disease called "selective blindness"?

"Sterile" is precisely the word I was looking for, LS. A website doesn't need to look like a bunch of Disney animators projectile-vomited every color of the rainbow onto the page in order for it to appear friendly and inviting (witness our own VideoHelp.com), but MyCE now looks like it was given a makeover by an accounting firm. Maybe that'll change in the days ahead, but right now I'm less than impressed (and won't be checking it nearly as often as I used to).

  13. They did announce this a few months back and I believe it was effective on like the 28th of October. Nonetheless, the new theme for the site makes navigation awkward. I suggest that people who do visit the site just go to the bottom of the window in the forums and select to use the Google theme or the v2 theme. Everything goes back to looking like it used to. I don't visit the site much anymore but it didn't come as a shock for them to rename it and give it a face lift.

It's been the new name since like July.
The valuable information on dvd burners is still the same IMHO.
Yuh, the website looks dreary but hell I use a forum for the content and not because it looks cool!

My bookmarks still point to vcdhelp.com

Don't care much for the layout at myce either. At the bottom of the forum page, there's a drop down to change the settings.
First one is their myce wide beta Second one is Google Site opp something or another. Too bad you can't change the layout on the front page.

I don't like the new name (it's too bland, has no character), liked the old one better (offbeat, easy to remember), but don't care very much. My old favorite/bookmark links are still forwarded OK, and I'll change them when/if I must.

    Otherwise...

I don't like it. It's sterile, needs some lines and divisions and compartments to help guide the eyes, too much whitespace, glares and hard on the eyes, hard to read. Also it's slow jerky vertical scrolling when I use the scrollbar at the right, not smooth like it should be. It takes awhile to fill in my video screen when I move to a different vertical position, a sort of trickle-down effect - as if the data is slowly trickling down the page.

The only style choices I see are MyCE Beta and MyCE Wide Beta, which are both equally as bad. I can't find the google or v2 styles others have mentioned, even on a forum page.

Ooops.... I was just scrolling down one of their forum pages and my browser froze up. So they've got some kind of serious compatibility problems as well.

Added later: After logging in as a member, the V2 and Google styles became available in the dropdown list at bottom of page, which returns things to the old format. That works OK, and my vertical scrolling problems and browser freezeups were fixed thereby. They need to kill the MyCE Beta and MyCE Wide Beta styles, which are terrible styles and buggy too.

Added last... The V1 style works a little better for me than the V2 style. So either the V1 or Google styles are best.

Things change all the time, so this change is natural.

Indeed, CD Freaks was so 90s, I second LS for this.

Myce for some reason reminds me Claude Cat (Looney Toons) try to capture 2 specific mice (Hubie and Bertie).
