However in the case of Star Trek (2009), I thought it was pretty good, worth the time and effort. I can't say about Up, because I don't watch cartoons.
That hasn't been a problem for me, as these days I generally only buy DVDs of movies, TV shows, etc. that I already know I like; my money's stretched too thin to take a chance on buying crap. If I back up a DVD, it's to keep the original in as pristine a condition as possible; either that, or I rip the movie to an XviD file on an external HD for portable viewing. (I'm long past the days of collecting as many DVD rips as I can just for the sake of having them, as I found myself accumulating a bunch of crap; I ended up replacing the few I liked with purchased versions, and tossing the remaining 99%.) Like you, Star Trek was definitely in the "gotta have it" category, but Up is another story.

  2. I think both movies are outstanding and jimdagys is an idiot, first for coming on here and bragging about illegally downloading or otherwise illegally acquiring these films, and second for his taste in movies.

I can't get any recent rips to play on my Panasonic DMR-E50, including this one.

They play just fine on a more recent machine.

  7. In case somebody try to burn region 3 version of this DVD:

Method 1> Hook on latest version's AnyDVD & run dvd shrink, select reauthor mode, use open file to open that disc & select title 17 to burn. Don't forget to remove unnecessary subtitle & audio languages.

Method 2> Just use latest version's DVDFab to backup burn title 17 to HD & use any burn software to burn it to DVD.

If you hear a "whirring" sound when you rip it don't worry, it's just Gene Roddenberry spinning in his grave...
