I have an oldish but legally bought disc of Paint Shop Pro 6.
After a little fumbling (first try on a brand new Windows 7 machine), I got it to install,
but when opening it, I get this message:
Failed to update the System registry. Please try using Regedit.
It repeats a couple times, but clicks away eventually and PSP seems to open and be fully operational.
It shows up on the various menus.
I googled and found some people are having trouble with Regedit itself,
and for that matter I wouldn't know exactly what to do in Regedit.
Any advice on what's happening here? Is this likely to happen with most older software?

Try launching PSP as an administrator and/or in XP compatibility mode. I have PSP 8 and it works fine on Win 7. I didn't even go through the install process since the files are on another partition using XP.

Well, I thought I did make myself the Admin, and 7 home doesn't do XP mode.
This is a laptop I just bought which is 64 bit as well as having 7 on it.
I don't mean the XP Mode that runs a full XP as a virtual PC. Locate the PSP executable file and right-click+Properties. You should see a compatibility tab - select XP SP2.
John, what a pal! Will give that a try!
ps Would you happen to know if Norton backups are readable across versions? In other words, the backups were all done with 360 2.0 and I accept the current pushed upgrade to 3.0 , does that make the 2.0 backups coasters?
I am so burned out...
In Vista, I had to sometimes do 2000 compat mode. Even though the software ran fine in XP, it still did not work in XP mode. Photoshop 6, for example.

Thanks for reminding me to add that mine is a 64 bit machine & OS also. I think... ACER still has this model listed as running Vista. Where onboard could you confirm that ? I wonder he said...
