The DVD, Lost, Season 5, Disc 1, is about 5.6GB in size but DVDFab, MagicDVDCopier and MacTheRipper all show it as being 21.5GB. When I look at the contents of the Video_TS folder, I see 65 movie file sets ranging from VTS_02 to VTS_14, each set with one .BUP, one .IFO and three .VOB files. There appear to be four or five copies of the same .VOB files with different sized .BUP and .IFO files for each copy.

How do I extract a usable set of files for copying?

You have to rip it with a ripper that is aware of multiple angles and allows ripping of a single angle for each title. The multiple angles are probably for something as simple as different language credits.

  3. New kind of copy protection?

What happens when you use the latest DVDFab to decrypt the disc? Does it give you a burnable results or does it choke on this fake file structure?

guns1inger: See below - I assume that DVDFab v6.0.7.0 is one such ripper?

CobraPilot: That's interesting - v6.0.6.0 registered 21GB and looked as if it would take about a day and a half to read it. v6.0.7.0 just shows a normal 5.6GB of files. Thanks for that.

I already use CloneDVD - it's always my avenue of last resort. Thanks to all who helped on this.

Humblest apologies Baldrick - you might move that forum heading up nearer to the top so people can see that it's more relevant than authoring.
