DVP5990 and thumb drives

Hi folks. I seem to recall a thread wherein someone was having problems with files over 1 gig on a thumb drive with this player. Hell, I think I even commented on it, but I can't seem to find the thread and it's likely too old to resurrect now. I have a movie file which is over 1.5 gig and although I haven't tried watching it yet I'm reticent to start enjoying something on the standalone only to have to watch the last 15-20 mins on my desktop. Is this a known issue with this player? I'm using a 4 gig Dane Elec thumb drive, and everything I've played around the 700 meg mark works fine. Thanks.

Really? No one knows what I'm on about? Ah well.

The comment I made about watching the last 15-20mins actually happened on this player with another flic of about the same size and using the same thumb-drive.

You could always just split the file into two parts.

Well, for the life of me I can't get this to save the first part in the split. Maye I'll look into some other stuff, though I thought for sure there was a discussion in here on this.

By the way, the Philips 5990 can play AVI files up to 2 GB.

How is the drive formatted? I've played (divx) avi just under 4gb on the dvp5990 (fat32 limit). It might take from 1 to 2 minutes to load from a thumb drive but on an externally powered usb hdd they load much quicker.

It's FAT32. Hell, maybe I'll just see how it plays this film. Or take Jag's advice and split with VD or VDM. Thanks for the responses, folks.

Another thought about this whole thumbdrive thang . . . Is there a way to have the DVP5990 read the files on drive alphabetically? It's not the biggest deal in the world unless (and it's not that big a deal, still) one is watching a flic in two parts. Often, after loading the thumbsucker, I find that the files are all out of order, and I have to stop the next file and go back to the file list to get part two of whatever I'm watching. Or is there something I can do on the PC end of things?

Hell, maybe I just don't know crud about thumbers.

The 5990 does not sort at all. It displays files in the order they appear in the directory. If you start with an empty folder and write files in alphabetical order they will appear in alphabetical order on the 5990. There are programs that can sort filenames in a FAT directory. Try DriveSort.

Thanks for the heads-up on Drivesort. So, if I'm transfering without something like drivesort, the files have to be added one at a time? I've tried lining up a few movies in a dir on the PC then transfering the lot at once, but the files always end up out of order. Anyhoo, as usual, thanks Jag.

If all the source files in are in one folder you can copy files to an empty thumb drive folder by sorting the display in Explorer, marking the files you want to copy, then dragging the topmost selected file to the thumb drive (or Copy/Paste).

Ah. I've been selectin a few files from many within the same directory and dragging them onto the drive. So, that explains that.

Though I'm kind of enjoying the DriveSort letting me continue on with my neophyte methods. :>
