I suppose this is not a new topic, but I know very little on this stuff. I have a camcorder with firewire output and a PC with corresponding input (a Dell Latitude D830, with XP). I would use my PC to capture my camcorder movies (on miniDV tapes) and then save them as .avi files. Have you any software tool to suggest? (possibly free...)
Thank you in advance for the help!

If you connect the camcorder, XP should pop up a window asking what you'd like to do. One of the options is to capture the video. If you don't like that then I'd suggest WinDV - a great little free applet that captures DV without any fuss.
