I'm a visual effects artist and have finally decided to retrace my steps over the years and re-assemble my demo reel of work into HD format then burn this to Blu-ray. I have some of the original files at high resolution but most are NTSC so I have to grab the clips from retail blu-ray disks.

I'm on a mac, so far I have ripped the Blu-ray files to MKV's using makeMKV.

Next I'd like to trim these down to the few shots I have worked on in each movie, then edit them together in an editing package and slap a bit of music in there to make roughly a four minute montage.

I'm not sure the best route though, I want to keep the quality as high as possible.

Using MediaInfo I have found that most of the MKV's are made with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and one is MPEG-2.

I found " Video Editor For Mac" from orgsoft, it seems to be able to trim the MKV's down to my desired in's and out's but I'm worried that even if I select the output format to be the same as the input format it is still going to be re-compressing the footage. BTW I also tried Amersoft Total Media Convert but it doesn't allow for conversion size of 1920 x 1080 ( at least version 2.0.1.3 doesn't)

Editing wise I'm thinking of using Imovie of final cut (I have version 6.04) but again I'm worried of double compression - thus loss of quality. Does anyone have any suggestion on my best route?

    cheers!

Try instead avidemux or/and tsmuxer(very basic cutter).

And I'm moving you to our mac section.
