If they are burned in subtitles you must use some OCR program like AVISubDetector.

If they are switchable use yamb for mp4 and virtualdubmod for avi. I'm not sure if wmv can embed switchable subs.

In VirtualDubMod, with the video loaded, go to the Streams menu and select 'Stream list'. Is the subtitle stream listed there?

The subtitles are most likely burned into the video (hardsubs = a part of the video data itself rather than a separate, easily extracted stream), then, and the only way to 'extract' them is to use an OCR program like Baldrick suggested, above.

    Have you tried using AVISubDetector?

Be warned that OCRing burned-in subtitles is not a quick, simple or automatic process, generally. You might be better off just running a web search for another set of subtitles for that particular video.
