convert H264 to mpeg and preserve quaily?

I know that if you start from a garbage, you get garbage.
But my question is that H264 is a codec for HD. If you convert from a high quality video (mpeg2) to H264 video (I have some mkv files containing H264 video), and then you convert back to mpeg2, can you still get back the high quality you start with? any tool?

If you are talking about true hd scale then down to required scale for mpeg2 (dvd) then there will always be some lose especially when H264 is involved.

Use gspot or mediainfo to confirm file for conversion details and post as to method best suited to required output.

Two lossy conversions will get you some loss of quality. If both are done well the losses may not be too severe.

Why do you bother asking? Just run the experiment yourself.

the reason I ask is H264 is a codec for HD. I wouldn't ask If it was about xvid. There is no need to try to do what was proven by s.o. else.

h.264 isn't a codec only for HD. Pixels are pixels. You have to decide for yourself if the losses are acceptable.

h.264 is mpeg-4 part 10 which is a larger standard

avchd uses h.264, but imposes restrictions on the specifications, and can be though as a subset

AVCHD uses h.264 but h.264 isn't limited to AVCHD. It can be used for any video.

What program converts h264 to avi/mpeg? I have avitodvd which does not. thank you

I don't know why mkv was invented, it causes so much problem. I just did some work last hight. I used avidemux. some mkv files may need to be remuxed before being processed by avidemux, use mkvmerge for remux. good luck.
