Tried google this but I only got more confused. I'm noob at encoding.
I got a 1280x720 (HD) h264 file and i want to add hardcoded subtitles to it. I know i must re-encode, but I don't know any good programs for this task. Anyone got some recommendations of programs to use (or maybe a link to some tutorial?). Help!
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

Higher bitrate will give you better quality, Q100 in that list
What container is your original file in?
You shouldn't have to re-encode the audio and lose quality
Did you already hardsub the video? -
original file is .mp4. I tried to select to encode into mp4 first, but the program froze at 98% when muxing, so I went with mkv.
I did hardsub it in mkv container. Great quality and all, but no sound as I said -
Use yamb to extract original audio from mp4
mkvtoolnix to add the audio to your hardsubbed mkv
