Is there a way to add the H.264 codec to WMP? Can I add just the one codec without installing FFmpeg?

    CoreAVC ($10).

Or I guess you want a free h264 decoder? Then I'm not sure...maybe a codec pack includes one and you can JUST select to install it.

FFmpeg is a converter, not a decoder. You can get DivX 7, which is a free and fast decoder. FFDShow is another free and fast decoder, but it handles more than just H.264.

All decoders (DirectShow decoders) will work in WMP as well as any other DirectShow players (e.g. MPC-HC, KMPlayer, ZoomPlayer, etc. but not VLC).

edit: If your problem is that H.264 in AVI doesn't play but H.264 in MKV does, then your splitter is probably wrongly configured.
