    Hi,
I have a Gateway AR-230, with the 1163 firmware. I have been having some disc fail issues. I researched and found that you can update the firmware with the Lite-On LVW-5001 firmware - as thay are the same unit. My question is - with the firmware update, the screens will show Lite-On. Is there a way to edit the firmware to say Gateway? I know its a goofy request. I have searched through different forums, and have only found how to change colors. Thanks for your help.
A small effort of Manners goes a long way down the road

  2. Editing a binary firmware file is not a trivial item. Is there a way to do it? Yes, almost certainly. Is it something you should attempt? Definitely not, unless you are familiar with editing binary files.

No offense intended, but working on firmware is one of those things that if you have to ask how to do it, you're not qualified to do it. I don't know how to do it, by the way. For such a trivial change, I can't recommend that you try. If you fail, you'll brick the recorder. Given how DVD recorders are vanishing from the US and Canadian marketplaces, do you REALLY want to risk destroying your player when you can just leave it alone and not destroy it?

This is not easy to do. You would need to extract the olf JPEG from the Gateway firmware. Then edit it to the same exact size as the one for the Liteon. Then you would need to edit the Liteon fw replacing the JPEG (with edited Gateway one). Finally you would need for the checksum to match so that the firmware update would take. Its a job for superman and not really worth the effort.
