there seem to be a problem with svcd2dvd when it comes video files (mkv's) created using the latest build of mkvmerge..
ive been using svcd2dvd to convert 720p hd tv (mkv) to dvd for a while now and never had a problem..
that is until now..
the other day i tried to convert 'True Blood S02E12 720p HDTV X264 DIMENSION' and when finished it was un-watchable, the picture was skipping and the audio was just a bad.. i thought it was a bad convert so i did it again, getting the same results..
ive also had the same results on 3 or 4 other mkv's which were all created using mkvmerge (Aug 21 2008)
any ideas

ok i have had a quick look at this... It will work if you use the "AVS Wrap" button (i.e click the button and then load the asset). This use AVISynth - so make sure you have it installed first.
In the meantime i will see what is going on.SVCD2DVD v2.5, AVI/MPEG/HDTV/AviSynth/h264->DVD, PAL->NTSC conversion.

Have you tried the AVIWrap option?

OK i tried the aviwrap option and it almost worked.. the picture was fine but it converted the ac3 5.1 to dd 2.0 how can i fix this ??
I tried it on two new HDTV MKV's as i managed to get True Blood in .TS format and it converted fine..
Now if i could only get it to leave the audio alone..

ok mate.
Ive got quite a few other tv shows to convert. Im watching 2 other new shows atm which i converted tonight and they are perfect so far.
I'll keep you posted. -
Hi ChrissyBoy,
Has this issue been resolved with an update? I just converted an .mkv file and ended up with a jerky DVD.
Have only done a couple of .mkv files but didn't have this problem with them.
I am reconverting the file using the Avisynth option at this time to see how that works per your instructions above.
I have no problems with other source file types avi, mpg etc.
Using v2.5 build: 2.5.5030, date: 28 Jan 2009
From MediaInfo:
Format : Matroska
File size : 8.75 GiB
Duration : 2h 6mn
Overall bit rate : 9 875 Kbps
Encoded date : UTC 2008-03-03 00:17:24
Writing application : mkvmerge v2.2.0 ('Turn It On Again') built on Mar 4 2008 12:58:26
Writing library : libebml v0.7.7 + libmatroska v0.8.1
Thanks,
John -
Hi ChrissyBoy,
Converting with Avisynth seems to have corrected the problem as you said.
Is there any way to keep the 6-channel audio instead of going to 2-channel?
Haven't burnt the DVD yet but looks good so far.
Will let you know if there is still a problem but it should be okay.
Thanks,
John -
I have a series of MKV files that are roughly 250 Meg in size that I'm trying to convert to DVD. When I add the assets they show up correctly in the asset window with a size roughly 250 Meg, but when I drag them into the VTS layout window, they show up with a size of around 1.625 Gig! I've tried the AVS Wrap option described above and I get an error saying SVCD2DVD error, unable to import asset. I'm using v2.5.5020. Ideas?
The details on one of the mkv file is video h264 718x480 NTSC and audio ac3 48KHz 0 Kbps ac3 48 KHz 0 Kbps. -
What are the durations?

That increase in size is normal. You aren't creating a data disc, you are converting to MPG2 for DVD, a higher bitrate format.

Thanks Dwight. It seems most of these MKV's swell to about 6.4 times their MKV size when converting to MPG2, so a 248MB MKV file becomes a 1,580MB MPG2 file. I loaded 4 MKV's (248MB, 228MB, 248MB, & 248MB) and ran through SVCD2DVD (without using AVS Wrap - see above - it's not working anyway). I clicked "Auto Fit" and the resulting output SVCD2DVD_OUTPUT/Video_TS files total size are just slightly too big to burn to DVD. Isn't Auto Fit supposed to take care of fitting to DVD? I have done this many times in the past without any problem, but usually with .TS files - not MKV files. Any help is greatly appreciated.
-
Autofit is usually pretty good but some source files are problematic, coming out over or undersized. I have determined that the source files are the problem by using other encoders (CCE, etc.) and receiving the same over/undersized result. I chalk it up to the origin of our material and live with it.
So, for all that, you can use DVDShrink to compensate for oversized materials. SVCD2DVD even has a built in setting for using it when needed.Dwight

Im in the process off encoding 4 MKV TV shows to DVD using the method you posted AVISynth and will let you know how i get on 15 mins remaining.
The error i was getting was, 3 Episodes perfect but 1 had jerky sound and video playback even though the file plays perfect before encoding.
Will post a log file up once its complete Chrissy
