I have tried to back up Close Encounters but there are over 130 M2TS files and none of them contain the whole movie. I have tried piecing them together but there are 3 different versions on the disk and I don't know the film too well. Also it is very episodic anyway. Is there anything that can guide me through this maze?

    BD Rebuilder?

Or do you want to backup to ts,mkv,mp4, etc?

This type of release does not lend itself to "fly by wire" simple backup by picking and choosing files off the disc: don't even try. The only sensible method is via freeware, shareware or paid backup packages that will just take the whole damn disc and compress it to a DVD-5 or uncompressed dual-layer DVD-9 (given the visual FX are the only reason for this films existence, you probably want a DL uncompressed backup). Try the DVDFab products recommended by most VH members, or the much more elaborate DVDrebuilder if you really want to tinker. I use SlySofts CloneDVD/AnyDVD duo, works for me every time. You'll definitely need both a decrypter and a "shrinking" or backup application. In my case, AnyDVD decrypts in the background while CloneDVD makes the actual backup. CloneDVD has a preview window that lets you look at all the various bits and pieces on the DVD, each of which has a check box allowing you to seamlessly delete them from the backup DVD (handy to get rid of logos, commercials, trailers, bonus extras you don't want that eat up disc capacity). Presumably other backup packages have similar functions. Because of the unusual "three branching versions on one disc" formatting of Close Encounters, you should perhaps just back up the entire disc: editing out the junk may be tedious to do and/or cause playback problems.

Those kind of blu rays are called "seamless branching discs"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seamless_branching

All you need to do is download the latest version of TsMuxeR, and load the correct "main movie" .mlps file in the same window you would pick the .m2ts file

You can determine the correct .mpls file w/......

    BD Edit
    BD info
Eac3to (you have to download GUI seperately)

I like Eac3to, so far it has never been wrong

note: W/ TsMuxeR you can remove the audio streams and subtitles you don't need to get 80-90% of the movies small enough to fit on a SL BD disc w/o compression

ps. To orsetto: He is talking about blu ray, not DVD, there is no such thing as a uncompressed blu ray backup to DVD-9, which is more accurately refered to as "BD-9"

Yes, I realized that this morning (answering posts late at night when bleary-eyed can lead to errors ) Since fazza8 didn't specify BluRay, I mistakenly assumed he meant standard DVD. I momentarily forgot only the Blu Ray release has the three versions on one disc, the standard release has them on three individual discs. I'm gonna let my post stand, though, since casual users may still want to investigate the dedicated backup packages. Clone DVD/AnyDVD-HD works well with both Blu Ray and standard DVD, other packages have varying levels of BluRay functionality. More technically-inclined users will of course take the path suggested by ocgw.

Well you did give good advice for DVD, but then again this is the "blu ray to blu ray" forum lol,......
except for 1 thing, while it is true, AnyDVD HD does work w/ DVD and blu ray alike, CloneDVD 2 doesn't work w/ blu ray, but Slysoft is working on a CloneBD that should be released soon

ps. I use DVDFab too, as well as CloneDVD 2
