    Greetings,

I must say I've had no luck getting mts files converted and looking good. Many thanks to this forum though for getting me this far. I'm not a comp whiz but I can follow instructions and I've tried all the codec suggestions, I'm not sure if I got it right every step of the way, but every friggin codec under the sun is installed. I've tried different conversion techniques, not sure if I missed something but the results were dodgy at best. And with all the software installs and all the efforts, I'm at a place now where a new pc seems like my only option.

I got to an ok conversion from mts to avi using Xiliosoft Video Converter using the mpeg4 codec, but still the result had artifacts and was not smooth....not bad....but not acceptable. I figure if I've dropped $800 on the Canon HF200 w/ all the bells and whistles, I may as well drop another $500-700 on a new pc.

I'm using XPSP3 Media Centre w/ Intel P4 3.0 Ghz w/ ATI Radeon Xpress 200 and I figured it's about 6 years old, so time to pull out the VISA.

Unless of course, some kind soul could spare me the purchase by providing some enlightening piece of info. Or perhaps advise as to what kind of PC/graphics card/etc I should get or avoid in order to play flawless HD on my 52" via the PC.

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

Buy yourself a WD TV Live media player. $120 plus HDMI cable (and either a USB thumb drive or a portable HD). Problem solved. It'll play your original MTS files without a hitch. Quite an impressive piece of hardware for the price.

BTW, Xvid4PSP does a good job converting AVCHD to h264 or Xvid

sounds like a good option, except I'll still want to process, edit and convert on my PC so I can get it online or make DVD's. Thanks though.

  4. This is a somewhat old thread, but it's still a plague for a lot of people out there who are still on XP and are using HD equipment that are recording in MTS format. The quick answer is that Windows 7 can play it. I'm not sure if there's anything in Windows XP that can play it natively. According to Wikipedia, Quick Time may be able to play it if you have certain addons, but I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate. I can tell you my Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit can play it with absolutely no problem, with Windows Media Player. My XP machines cannot... I'm still researching how to play it. I really don't want to have to convert it.
