    Hey there,

Ok I bought a used JVC SVHS HR-290IU at a garage sale today for 10.00 USD. I thought it would be great for backups. I was going to be using an older magnavox 4 head stereo vcr (non svhs) for backups. However this would be much better with svhs - which I have never had before.

However it does not power on. I only spent 10.00 on it so in the end if it isn't salvageable I am not out a ton of money.

I do remember an old vcr I got used that didn't work. The resistor wasn't good so it was replaced and kept on working. I am wondering if this is the case here. Ok I don't know if it really is a resistor - I am not mechanically inclined as far as inner workings of parts. I know how to use stuff and assembling computer parts to a minor degree (snap in pci boards and stuff). But I don't solder and that kind of thing.

Here is a picture of what I took out and want to replace:

So could that be the culprit? Would replacing this be a good step to take?

Also is this jvc svhs model worth restoring? Is it a good quality model? I just want it to be better than a 4 head non svhs vcr. I doubt it has tbc - it doesn't say it on the box.

But how are home repairs on vcrs? Would it be worth getting a book out of the library on it?

Also how much would a replacement for this be at something like Radioshack?

    Thanks..

That's a fuse....looks like a "Slo-Blo" (Slow Blow) one. I believe they still are available and yep...I'd try Radio Shack first.
Oh...and they should be pretty damn cheap.

    @ hech54 - yeah sorry I meant fuse - like I said I'm not mechanically experienced.....

Thanks for the info. I'll definetely check it out and see if that might be the culprit.

If you put some serious glasses on....you'll be able to read the volts, watts, etc etc on the metal ends of the fuse. Usually if a fuse blows there is something that caused it....something that a new fuse will not cure.....it may just pop again.

The JVC HR-S2901U is a piece of crap compared to the "good" ones. It was the last low-end JVC made.

It will, however, possibly be better than a consumer VHS VCR.
Yes, an upgrade for you, maybe.

I have the JVC HR-S2902U. One revision up from yours.

Video quality is better than a standard consumer VHS as long as its in EDIT mode with the Video Stabilizer turned off.

Audio quality is horrible. There is a constant hum on everything except store bought tapes.

I have to capture all my self recorded TV tapes twice (JVC for video, Panasonic for audio) and then splice the video and audio together in an editing program.

That fuse doesn't look blown to me, but I'm only looking at a picture. I suspect your problem lies elsewhere.

Okay 2902 was last, 2901 next to last.
The last decent low-end series was the 4800.
The 3600 and 3800 were okay (I own 3 of them), but 4000's better.

Well went to radioshack. THey didn't have the 1.25 250 fuse. They did have a 1.5 250 fuse for 4 pack for 3.00.

I tried it and the first one blew (blue spark). I tried another and it didn't blow but nothing else happened. Tried another still nothing.

I even went back to the original and nothing. Oh and by the way the newer ones had a smaller fillament then the old one.

I"m beginning to think I am getting in over my head. I even took the facia off thinking maybe the power button wasn't being depressed strongly enough. Nope didn't do anything.

So I'm thinking I'm chalking this up to a loss (now up to 13.00 total - no biggy). I've actually been really good at garage sale stuff. I think this is the first total loss I've had in quite some time. Granted I don't gamble on really pricey stuff. I have a cut off usually on how high I'll go on something used. If its too high I'll usually buy it new unless its rare or hard to find.

    Exactly!!

No offense, but if it was a garage sale, there should have been an outlet somewhere near ?

You should have at least plugged it in and seen if it would power up, then if it did not, ya can say, i'll give ya a buck for it!!

They new damn well it did not power up!!!

Or did you buy it knowing it did not power up ?
