  1. I am trying to basically learn how to make DVDs on my own. I am trying to make my own menu with scene selections

First Of how do I convert a mpg or a avi to a vob file and then how do I convert my interactive menu with scene selections and make it link to the vob files and play like a normal DVD. Is there software programs around like that?

In the tools section (left column) you can search for dvd authoring programs. One example would be DVDStyler. And on the very basic side, there's DVDFlick. I use DVDA (DVD Architect) for my work. The DVDA studio version of DVDA sells for under $125US.
