Be patient. Many deals out there for the patient persons.

Last year, I purchased a JVC MC-500 (3CCD, nice consumer - not certain if I'd make the prosumer tag, although the price should've pushed it there). for $400. Not bad for a once $1500 piece.

Old Pro stuff is still going above $400, so I can't advise.

I wouldn't buy the $169 piece with the "MIJ" CMOS: It is still a CMOS - at least look for a nice model with CCD sensor.

Need target goals before "best" means anything.

    For what purpose?

If we go by my needs, the "best" would be a used DV cam.

Craigslist has many low use Canon Z series MinDV for less than $400. Many people use these a few times and lose interest. There are good Sony's as well but one must study the models. Some great bargains but I'd recommend meeting the local seller and checking it out before you buy. Ebay is a tougher unseen seller savvy environment. If you know what you are looking for, Craigslist tips the power to the buyer.

And I don't really want to buy over craigslist or ebay

That's a decent camera. You get what you pay for, obviously.
