Looking for a new DVD recorder w hard drive that doesn't suck

Hi all, new to the forum and just have a couple quick questions. Is the Philips 3595H available in the United States (120V 60 Hz) and has Philips addressed the earlier shortcomings of the 3575 and 3576H issues? I had a DVD recorder previously by Magnavox that was crap, errors at least 50% of the time when finalizing. Anyway, I love the idea of storing before recording with the hard drive before I decide if I really want to record, which holds much more than my Comcast DVR. My concerns are the HD playback and record quality.

My big question is whether this tech is obsolete, and should I wait for newer products. I really would like another DVD recorder and the fact that I can store for a while before I decide to burn really appeals to me.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

DVD recorders have not been a success in the USA as the desire to archive is not there amongst the majority, therefore you will not find official store stock

I know you had bad luck with your Magnavox, but the best thing going right now is the Magnavox 2160. It's a virtual clone of the Philips 3575/6 and made by the same parent company Funai.
IMO much of what Funai makes is sub standard or very value priced, the 3 models I mentioned are an exception. AFAIK the 3595 it's PAL only and wouldn't do you any good in the US.
If you're interested an a new Panasonic or Pioneer DVDR w/HDD check places like WorldImport.com, they still sell plenty.

Yes, I agree, go for the Magnavox! Get it at Walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10104532
(NOTE: Not available in probably 99% of the stores, BUY IT ONLINE! Site to Store, or Ship to Home/Office.)

It's really not too much different than the aforementioned Pioneer units, or the much-respected Philips 3575...

.. but it's surely cheaper AND brand new.

I have no personal experience with the Philips DVD recorders, but I did, earlier this year, purchase a Magnavox H2160MW9 via Walmarts' Site-To-Store feature.

Based upon everything I've read, your best bet is to go for one of the still available Pioneer DVD recorders.

You might want to take a look at it.

Whatever you buy, just try to get it from a reliable source that offers a good return policy (just in case), and good luck in your search.
