How to remove a shadow from the white background in the still image?

I took some still images while capturing a video. Some images have shadow in the white background. Do you know how to remove a shadow from the white background in the still image or photo?

Photoshop, paint.net or gimp can all do this. Mask off the area you want to change and paint over it. Or use a cloning tool. Or any of a dozen other methods.
