philips dvp5982 + NAS + Wireless

I've had the philips dvp5982 standalone divx player coupled with a WD 300gb USB HDD (FAT32) via USB - Standalone then plays through surround receiver to TV. Setup works great - even though i have to sit for a minute or two and figure out what movie the file actually as because of the 8 character DOS limit... Creative naming...

My problem is that I've run out of space...

What I would like to setup is a NAS-wireless-Standalone combination.

For example, would a NAS (i.e. Buffalo Linkstation) with 2 USB ports... can I hook one to a larger USB HDD and the other up to the philips dvp5982 Standalone - and still be able to play movies as is? I figured the NAS part would allow me to stream video and mp3 to all laptops via 802.11 wireless...

Also, with the NAS would I be able to access files only as a FTP-type server or does the NAS allow me to use the attached drives as regular network shares (the good ole "Map Network Drive" in windoze)?

I doubt you'd be able to use a USB network connection with the 5982 - just standalone drives. Unless I'm misinterpreting what you're asking.

There's been discussion of modified firmware for the 5982 here: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic348913.html
...that supposedly allows for 40-character filenames, among other things. But as I don't have the 5982, I can't test it or say if it works.

I see what your saying... If I plugged the USB HDD into the NAS - the standalone would not recognize it as it is not plugged directly into the standalone... Makes sense - thanks for letting me bounce that off you...

I also looked at the USB "Y" cable as a workaround... however, that a no-go also - as one end of the Y is power only(no data)

I guess that leaves with only a larger HDD for direct connect or flipping to a media center...
