I have a video file on my Uni MacBook (Leopard) I need to convert in
order to get it into iMovie to edit, but I can't find anything that will recognize it or deal with it.
QT Player plays it fine on my Mac; I do have Flip4mac installed.
Using Get Info the Kind says "Quick Time Movie," and
the Codec says "Windows Media Audio 9 Standard, Windows Media Video 9
Standard.
There doesn't appear to be any extension, though I've tried adding some
(.mov, .wmv) with no success.
iMovie won't recognize the file to import. I've tried three conversion
apps also (iSquint, FLVCrunch, and something else I trashed) and none
will deal with it. VLC will not open it: "main: no suitable decoder
module for fourcc `WMV3'. VLC probably does not support this sound or
video format."
Any ideas on what else I could try?
Thanks,
Jeff
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

If QT Player will play it, then MPEG Streamclip should also be able to open it and convert it for you.
Note that it might be possible that you have to go to some intermediate format before it will convert to DV-Stream (assuming you're talking about iMovieHD)' otherwise, newer versions of iMovie will be quite happy with a file converted to H264/MP4 with AAC audio. -
Thanks everyone. Tried ffMepegX but no luck, though I can see the app is quite useful. I ended up just capturing it with iShowU, which turned out okay except it's a little choppy.

You need to install Flip4Mac's WMV Player Pro,
which would have allowed you to open the file
natively in Quicktime or iMovie. From there, you simply export
out to a file format of your choice. ( that's the PRO in WMV Player Pro,
an advantage over the Free Flip4Mac that only allows playback)"Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."
