I'm using Avidemux 2.4 Qt4 to edit QuickTime video. I edit and save to AVI just fine but my new videos only play with QuickTime Player, with difficulty. Before editing all my videos work great with everything-QuickTime, Real Player, WMP, etc. Is there anything I can do? Should I just use another free video editor? Is my Real Player and WMP out of date, though they have no problem playing everything before being edited??? Plus my Avidemux edited MOV or MP4 files don't play on anything.
Thanks,
John

Of course I use the .avi (or .mov or .mp4). It doesn't work unless you type the extension by hand.
It saves just fine, until I want to actually play them again. -
are you using the setting "copy" for video and audio?
edit - there is a newer version also - 2.5 -
I tried the newest version, no change.
When I try to play the files all I see is:
Error 2048 Could not open the file because it's not a file QuickTime understands.
Windows Media Player encountered a profile while playing the file. -
I'm sure there are better players but I want a universal one.
Encoding settings, what? xvid? What's that?
And I believe "copy" is the default setting. I just delete unwanted portions and save. -
Not all formats are compatible in all containers. For example, depending on what your source .mov is using, it might not work to "copy" it into an .avi container
You can use mediainfo on your source to determine more information
Also, if you edits are not on keyframes, it might screw up the video as well
KMplayer, VLC, SMPlayer are pretty much "universal" players and don't require other splitters/codecs installed, they include everything. Whereas WMP and other directshow players usually need external filters installed -
If you're going to edit the video, you should rebuild the keyframes. And yes, mark in point (A) must be on a keyframe.
Pull! Bang! Darn! -
I just use default modes, nothing fancy. I am trying to trim home video down to size.
Format, container? keyframes? Splitters/codecs??? What?*lost*
I'm just an ordinary man trying to edit home video. Is this what you're looking for:

avidemux seems to have problems with many kodak cameras. I found a clip from that camera online, and it wouldn't play nicely
You can use QTPro, or MPEGStreamClip for simple cut edits, and it works fine. The good news is your clips are all I-frame (i.e you can cut anywhere, forget about keyframes), and there is no quality loss if you keep the .mov container (re-encoding to xvid/avi will cause quality loss)
If you look on the author's webpage of MpegStreamClip, there is a free special version of QT alternative that allows you to do edits -
Ran into my first problem with theis otherwise great program the other day. Split a file into 3 for posting to Youtube. The 1st and 3rd segments went up fine but the 2nd won't convert. Tried 4 times. Will have to see if I can't find another editor for xvid....

Thanks, I'm trying MPEGStreamClip. The "save as AVI" works but the the file is the same size as the MOV, isn't AVI supposed compressed? When I "convert to AVI" the AVI file is HUGE.
Thanks,

I believe (not a big user of mpeg-streamclip) that you have to select AVI as the output, and then choose a codec. If mpeg-streamclip can see the codecs you have installed, then these should be listed.
