  1. My new Pocket PC (an HTC Touch Pro 2) records video clips as MP4 files, This is a format I'm not familiar with and I'd much appreciate some help in understanding how to use them after transfer to my PC please. Here's a very short example (300 KB)

When I play this on my PC I get a variety of results:

BSPlayer, Irfanview, MPC seem to use ffdshow (because I see its icon in my tray) and display the logo 'Main Concept' top right.

Power DVD plays no sound (a message says it needs upgrading to use AAC), and the logo 'DivX' appears bottom right.

VLC and KMPlayer are the only ones that don't display a logo.

Also, can anyone please explain why the quality of these clips poor compared to the identical resolution (640 x 480) clips I get from my Canon Ixus digicam?

Try MediaInfo instead of G-Spot - it will generally give you far better details for MP4 files. It would also help if you posted a mediainfo tree output of the Ixus files for comparison.

Aside from codec differences, the quality difference could be as simple as the quality of the optics. After all, the Ixus is a dedicated camera with good quality optics, the HTC is a phone with a camera thrown in, and I have yet to see any phone camera match optics with a reasonable dedicated camera.

  4. Thanks guns1inger. I'd forgotten about the optics! I'm sure that's the whole or major cause of the difference - naive of me to expect better.

Off on walking vacation tomorrow, so Canon Ixus will be earning its keep

I'll experiment with MediaInfo on my return.
