I normally use vlc player with the ffdshow codecs to watch anime, but recently when I open avi files the player crashes as does explorer.exe
A friend suggested I use wmpc with the k-lite codec pack but I get the exact same problem as soon as I open the avi file, any suggestions as to the cause or a possible fix?
I'm using windows xp on a fairly decent spec pc, I have played the files with this pc before >.<

Does it crash when you preview/choose the file in explorer?
Have you changed any hardware settings lately? maybe graphics card drivers.
Is it just avi files that causes this?
Try also play with smplayer, it has builtin codecs...but vlc media player has also builtin codec so I suspect that it something else than any codec problem.
It crashes after I have selected the file, when I use vlc I can still hear the sound just no picture. I just tried to run mp4 with wmpc and I get the exact same problem.
I have not altered any hardware settings at all, I just have not used this pc in a month however.
Updating my gpu drivers now.
VLC uses its own internal file readers/splitters and codecs. So if VLC doesn't work the problem is in the graphics card's drivers. Probably a video overlay problem.
Yeah, I updated my gpu drivers and the problem is solved

Should have thought of doing that myself before even posting >.<
Thanks a bunch guys
marzipan,
Glad to see replacing/updating the gpu drivers fixed it.
You may want to do the same thing to the friend that recommend k-lite.
If he was a good friend, he would have recommended the self-contained (like VLC) MPCHC which doesn't need crap codec 'packs'.
Actually, now you can do him a (real) favor and show them the error of their ways!Have a good one,
neomaine
