Hello everyone! Thanks in advance if you read through all this!

So, I followed the instructions layed out by edDV (possibly not completely :S) I output a color signal from my ADVC 300 via S-Video to my JVC HR-S5912U

    DEFAULT

    CHANGED

I think I might still be missing some brightness or contrast? Should that line on the left graph be exactly on the 100 IRE mark?

I thought the originals were looking a little too "RED" & "MAGENTA". My change seems have everything bang on centre except red and yellow. Would a Proc Amp allow me to change just the slop of the red/magenta vector and blue/yellow vector?

Here are some sample screen caps of Before and After:

    DEFAULT

    CHANGED

    DEFAULT

    CHANGED

    DEFAULT

    CHANGED

Here is an example of my Panasonic AG 1980P at DEFAULT

is my change lacking contrast? Keep in mind I'm trying to do my best with only my ADVC 300 controls. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should be changing to give me a better correction to my image?

Are the changes I made still too dark even if only a little bit? White balance appears to be bang on. (right?)

    Thanks for all your help!

Your chroma levels are "legal" for the color bars, but sometimes, even "legal" chroma levels can look a bit noisy on an S-VHS source (especially if it is dubbed down a generation or two). You should also use your color bars to calibrate your monitor (which can help you better "eyeball" some of your tweaks). Since you are in Canada and not Japan, I would also say your pedestal (black level) might be low for S-VHS. It should not be at zero, but rather 7.5 IRE. (Of course, if the color bars are digital, a zero IRE pedestal would be fine for them -- just not the S-VHS footage.)

Your vectorscope and waveform do not reflect the video images you posted -- only the color bars.

OK. Thank you for the comment!

So have I actually done anything worthwhile here?

I was under the impression that if I calibrated my ADVC to properly display the colour bars (played back by a tape recorded by that VCR on that VCR) that any future tape played by that VCR would be properly interpreted by the ADVC. (sorry, a bit of an eyeful there)

The ADVC switch is set to 7.5 IRE. How is my luma level? Should I increase that via brightness or contrast? haha, I have no idea what I'm doing but at least the picture appears to look less "red/magenta" but now does it look "too less red/magenta"?

"Your vectorscope and waveform do not reflect the video images you posted -- only the color bars. "

I understand this, but is this not how you properly tweak your saturation (magnitude) and hue (phase)?

    Thanks so much!

Should my lower level of luminance be set to 7.5 and my upper set to 100? (or should it span 0-100)

EDIT: I'm not sure anymore if what I am doing is worth while. Regardless, I'm still trying to develop a better vectroscope plot. I'll update soonish.

    EDIT #2:

Just so that people don't think I'm doing NOTHING on my own.

Here is my new Vectroscope plot, I forgot to include the corresponding slide controller screen cap.

Here is 1 example of the effect it had on another video.

In case I wasn't clear on what I was doing. I'm trying to adjust the default settings on my ADVC 300 in order to record a more "correctly" coloured video signal from other tapes. I am calibrating first adjusting it based on a color bar signal. Is it clear what I am doing? Thanks.

On my calibrated computer monitor, your DEFAULT looks better than CHANGED.

I have another question. Because I am dealing with North American signals, should I adjust the lower limit on my IRE plot so that it aligns with the 7.5 line or should it span 0-100?

I have my ADVC 300 set to 7.5 IRE using the dip switch on the bottom.

    Thanks again!

My photographer friend confirmed that for the skin tone, the brightness and contrast were spot on for my third vectorscope plot and I'd say I am happy with the skin tone seeing as how this is the 4th of 5 conversions I intend to do. The 5th conversion will use the best equipment I ever intend to get with custom vectorscope plots for each capture.

  7. for what it's worth:

    Red's complementary is Cyan
    Green's complementary is Magenta
    Blue's complementary is Yellow

If that can help you enhance your vids....
