  1. I know this may seem rather silly, but I yearn for hte details. When authoring a disk, the
files which get created on the disk follow a process. The assemblage is according to what
the author wanted in its creation.

    Sooooooo

Is there a document that outlines what files are created based on the authors request. I am
assuming that an software engineering spec exists as it had to be used to create the
firmware that all DVD players use. I have seen an obscure reference to this document but
it costs a pretty penny to purchase. I'm looking for the no-cost version.

Also, is there a flow diagram that outlines this process on assemblage. Given that each company
who creates these tools may have there own way, I was hopeful that some guru had an explanation
that was generic. Asking a lot? Yes. Anyone have any resources toward this?

About all I can advise is to look to the upper left on this page for "WHAT IS' DVD. There is basic info on the DVD structure, format and specifications. More info is also is available in the links there.

There is some very expensive documentation available that describes exactly what the DVD specification is, and what a player must be able to do to carry the DVD Video logo. You have to be a member of the DVD consortium to get it.

As for us mortals, it is pretty simple. The basic spec has two folders. Audio_TS (optional) and Video_TS (mandatory). The Video_TS folder contains the DVD videos files. You will have VOB (Video OBject files) that contain all the video, audio, subpicture and menu data, IFO (InFOmation) files, which contain basic details on the structure of the DVD, including aspect ratio, format, titles structure and chapter stops, amongst other things, and BUP (BackUP) files, which are simply copies of the IFO files. VOB files have a size limit of 1000MB. If a titleset is larger than this (and most movies are) then you will have several VOB files.

You can see all of this if you look at any commercial or home made DVD. The actual structure varies from disc, based on the number and size of the titlesets that have been authored.

A quick google produced the follwing links for further reading :

    http://dvd.wwwdotorg.org/specs/specs.html
    http://dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html
    http://www.dvd-replica.com/DVD/orderdvd.php

I have not read these and do not vouch for their content in any way.

Perhaps if you gave your reasons for wanting the information, we could give you something more specific. Your questions seem confused and poorly worded, and in some places seem to be asking about the authoring process and the intermediate files created (which could be almost anything), and then you start asking about DVD player design. I am not sure exactly what you are after.

Someone on Doom9 provide a link to an older version of the structure of DVD files. I'm not sure who owns this so I won't post a direct link to the zip file but it's called dvdlayout.zip on this page:

    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=50552&page=2

It won't explain how the process all fits together but if you want details about the content of each file in the DVD structure then this is it. I think some people are selling an updated version of this unofficial DVD material.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

That's great to know now I won't feel bad. I don't like linking directly to material if I'm not sure of its ownership. I was pretty sure some of it came from mpucoder but they had become a member only pay for use site a few years back. It now looks like they are a willing party to the public release of the information so that's good.
