I have just bought a laptop which has a Blu-ray drive and I own a PS3. I would like to rip my Blu-ray movies to a format best suited for the PS3 using an external hard drive plugged into it.

I've been impressed in the past with Blu-ray rips in the MKV format which have been compressed down to about 4GB. I have used TSMuxer to change the MKV into a file that the PS3 supports.

How can I rip and then convert to a compressed MKV? What, more importantly is the quickest way to do it? I tried to rip a 1 hour episode (27GB) on Blue-ray and convert using RipBot but after 9 hours it said 6 hours to go and I gave up! Is there a quicker way?

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

The PS3 won't play the MKV format. You can use M2TS (larger overhead - 200+ MB) or MP4 (less audio format support) if you want to play them back directly.

    Try RipBot

Sorry, I'm not too good with all this stuff! I used to convert the MKV using TSMuxer to play on PS3. I tried RipBot but should it take 15 hours to encode 1 hour of video as in my case?

Depending on the settings, yes, 15 hours is not unheard of. It takes a lot of time and CPU to encode BluRay down to something more portable. Do a search and I think you will find that 18 hours on a quad core is about the norm.

WOW! I don't think I'll bother if that's the case. Maybe in a while I'll invest in a large external hard drive and make full rips of my Blu-rays instead.

    Thanks for your help gunslinger.

Blu-Ray files with non- VC-1 video method:

MakeMKV (you'll need AnyDVD running) -> .mkv file
mkv2vob -> .mpg file that will stream perfectly on the PS3
Total process for me is about 50 minutes

    Video with VC-1
    MakeMKV -> .mkv file
No clue after that. I try to stream is with PS3 Media Server, but it clips.
You need to re-encode the VC-1 -> AVC or some other video format

I finally found a reliable tool to reencode the VC-1's

    HDCOnverttoX

re-encodes the VC-1 into an x264, and gives you a new mkv.
run the mkv through mkv2vob and it will stream.
Process takes a long time, but it works well.

You might also be interested in the PS3 Media Server (so that you could end up with files in a wider range of formats and still play them on your PS3.)

I'd agree with this post. PS3 Media Server is a great piece of software which I personally use almost every day. However, if it doesn't work out for you, you should do some research on the AVCHD format which the PS3 can read on external hard drives (fat32). If you have a large enough hard drive, you can just rip a movie straight to the hard drive and play it from the PS3, no re-encoding necessary.

On a side note, what resolution were you trying to encode to when you tried ripbot? Perhaps using a lower 720p-ish resolution for your output would be better since it would cut down on encoding time. Ideally with a fast computer, you can run your encode at night and when you wake up in the morning it'd be done.

You will be limited by the 4Gb file size limitation of FAT32.

    Just play the original disks.
