Old Home Movies

Hey guys noob here,

I have some old home movies that my parents had transferrred from 8mm reels(assuming), to a small black polaroid tape about 4 or 5 inches wide in the mid 80's sometime. We had a machine you popped these in and it had a small screen to watch to.The tapes look to me like the were wowned from 8mm reel to the tape not sure positive though.I took them to our photo shop to have them put on dvd but they said they couldnt only the reels themselves. any idea what these tapes are or how to transfer them to dvd?

No label on the tape?

Could be...
VHS or VHS-C or S-VHS 1/2" wide tape.
Video8 or Hi8 or Digital8

or it could be a pro format.

This would all be printed on the cassette.

Do you still have the original film reels? Those would transfer better.

the only label is a blue and yellow one with 2 white arrows which is what u label ur title, i tore it off to and nothing and polaroid stamped on it. The actual measurement is 5 1/8 x 1/2,solid black nothing see thru

Yup -- we need to see a photo. Actually, at one time, Polaroid attempted to market "instantly developed" Super 8 movies just like they were doing with still photos. They came in special cartridges that were displayed on proprietary viewing devices. But the images were dark and muddy, and the technology came out around the time that home video (Betamax) entered the market. The Polaroid movie system went obsolete very quickly. I hope that is not what you are dealing with.

could it be this?

Polaroid film cassettes are in standard super 8 film format. It is necessary to remove the film from the cassette and resplice it on a larger reel before the film can be transferred.

Good going, T-Fish. That's what I was talking about. Even after re-spooling the film onto a reel, Polaroid's version of Super-8 was so dense that it was hard to see it on anything other than their own player unit. There may still be difficulties transferring that film to video.

Update: It was called Polavision film. After a search, I located a company that will transfer it to DVD for you:

Ah, yes -- Polavision. This was the technology that caused the ouster of Edwin Land from the company he had founded. He didn't think that videotape would ever be competitive. He was a chemist, so chemical film seemed the way forward to him.
