i am encoding one of my DVD(a very old dvd) to x264 (mkv) file using Xvid4PSP.
but the DVD shows it has mono channel.

is there any wrong if i convert it two channels or 5.1 channels.

There is nothing wrong with doing that. You can simply extract the audio, process it with Audacity to have 2 channels, then re-mux it to the mkv with mkvtoolnix. It will still be mono, but 2-channel instead of one (usually left).

Just be aware that any of these operations will increase file size. That may not be an issue, but just be aware of it.

As Supreme2k said, you'll end up with 2-channel mono; these conversions cannot recreate missing information, so mono stays mono. If you're trying to solve a problem with sound coming from only one channel, then this will do so. If you already have (mono) sound coming from two speakers, and hope to change that to true stereo (or even 5.1 surround), the answer is no, you won't be able to perform that miracle.
