    Hello,
I looked everywhere on here before i posted and found some answers but not exactly what I was looking for.

I haven't purchased a PS3 yet and this may be the deciding factor.
I have a bunch of avi movies on my mac.
When i convert them to dvd it doesnt always work the way i want.

If i put them on to a dvd+r unconverted (keep as avi) and pop the dvd+r into the PS3, will the PS3 play them.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I searched on here for a while.

    Thanks

AVI is just a container. How the movie is compressed - which codec was used - determines what can play them back. If they are Xvid/Divx then most likely they will. You need to provide more detail about the files to get a more definitive answer. If this is the case, a cheaper solution is a $60 Philips Divx capable DVD player.

  3. PS3 supports Divx/AVI. But AVI is a container and can contain audio and video encoded with many different codecs.

Thank you all, i'm new to all this video stuff.
I'm trying to study the glossary and types of files.
I'll look through some of the avi files and see.

    Thanks again

  5. Use tools like MediaInfo and GSpot to identify container types and codecs.

Yes, you can use programs like AVIRecomp (very easy), VirtualDub (takes a little learning), etc.
