Best bitrate/resolution etc for watching avi on a 32/37" LCD TV

Hi,

I need some guidance on 1)what would be the best bitrate/resolution of an .avi (movie) to watch on a 32"/37" LCD TV, in a near-DVD quality and 2) would converting a DVD to avi, by using Auto GK at 75% quality provide good results for the above TV?

Yes. And there's no answer for the first question, as one bitrate does not fit all. Much better is a quality encode such as the AutoGK Target Quality 1-pass encodes, because then it uses the bits it needs to achieve the desired quality.

As manono implied, the higher the quality the source, the more it can be compressed with good quality. Another factor is the amount of motion present in the source. Most film based movies were shot with careful control of motion. Home videos are often jerky with uncontrolled motion. The latter requires much higher bit rates to avoid motion artifacting.

As said above the target quality setting is good for getting pretty consistant result. If storage size is not an issue for you then this is the way to go. As for what % to use, then this is something you might want to test out by ripping a few chapters from different movies and then running autogk on them at different % settings and see what works for you.

Also I tend to let autogk work out what res to use and you might want to consider the audio side as you can keep the DVD original audio or MP3 it for a smaller filesize.

All I've done is try and test. The only thing I'd try to avoid is getting into circles of comparing one encode against another and another until you get so fed up not making a choice that you loose all enthusiasm to do what you planned to do in the first place. I've been there many times.

Why not just watch the DVD and let either the TV or the DVD player do the upscaling for you?
