I store my DVD's as whole VOB's on a network drive and stream them to my PS3 for viewing. I'm sick and tired of not having chapters, and subtitles (for Hero and Crouching Tiger). Is there a format that can be read by the PS3 that rivals MKV compression quality and can keep things like chapters/subs in tact?

Additionally, I've started ripping my Blu-ray collection but some compression is critical here since the .m2ts files range from 20GB to 35GB for my personal collection. Again the PS3 doesn't read the MKV files which are the best choice here. I'm aware of the several guides that exist to pull the audio/video from an MKV into a VOB that can be read by the PS3. Am I right that there are no chapter/sub data contained in the VOB as well?

Aside from buying a network media player, is there something else I can consider to store/stream my movie collection to the PS3?

EDIT: not sure if this is in the right section since my question covers multiple topics. Please feel free to move mods.

The latest version of TSMuxer says it can keep MKV chapters when repackaging to M2TS format. Might be worth a look.

I don't think so. Maybe just let hope ps3 add real mkv support in the future.

For your mkv to vob questions go to www.mkv2vob.com .

Been in the United States on business/pleasure. Just wanted to chime back in and say thanks once again. I think I'm going to side on a network media player that can support a broader range of formats and maybe pick-up another 2TB of space so I can keep my BD rips as images. What feels like a little money spent now will be forgotten soon enough and relieve me the headache (and time) of converting/encoding etc. etc.

I tell you though, I think Sony is going to lose any customers who are buying the PS3 as a media player (like me) instead of a game system due to their lack of format support. Of course there are walk-arounds but there are too many better (and cheaper) hassle-free solutions out there now. At least it's still a blu-ray player.

$100 gets me a WD TV media player that can read ISO's along with everything else under the sun. Add the Wi-Fi hack and new thumbnail support and I'm off to the races.
