    i have 2 .srt scripts and an .avi movie. what i need in the end is one file with 2 switchable subtitle tracks. i have been told that putting softsubs i avi is a bad idea, and have been recommended mkv. is there a step by step guide for smth like this?

    mkvmergegui (mkvtoolnix)

    press add & select the avi, subs. press "start muxing". done.

    You have been misled. AVIs with embedded .SSAs work fine in
    Windows Media Player with the help from Haali Media Splitter.

    I would use AVISub or Sub2Divx, they allow you to make a .divx (a .avi container) with as many subs as you want, the subs are called .xsub, do a search here for more info, you can change the font, size, shadow, etc and the file will play in a divx DVD player, been using this for a couple of years now, very good.
