  1. Hi

Recently I bought this Philips 5996 but I am unable to play large files via USB. Is there any file size limit via USB? Can I play large files via disc?

The file I tried to play was encoded with XVID & is 2.4 GB, .avi format. I am herewith enclosing the GSpot specifications of the video file for your reference just in case.

And is there any difference if I write my DVDs on +R or -R so that the player could deliver better results?

File size is limited to 4GB (FAT32)

Your raster size is too big @1280x576. Max is near 720x576.

Also VBR audio encoding may be an issue.

  3. Max size of 4gb per file. No hi-def stuff (above 720x576).. qf of 096 is crummy
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

Thanks for the replies guys. But https://forum.videohelp.com/topic354707.html suggests QF is of no use. And as it says the video I posted is absolutely of extreme clarity but QF is disappointing.

And from the 720x576 thing, I understand that when they say that this is the best [1080i] HDMI player, it should probably be upscaling videos from 720x576 to the 1080p...Am I right?

Are there any DVD players that can actually play HDs directly @ 1080 pixels?

    Regards
    N Deepak.

Very few. Perhaps some of the Oppos might. If you want playback of HD material, try a WDTV unit instead of a DVD player. Even the BluRay players that support Divx playback (not many of them do) are SD limited.

Divx has a list of certified HD players. The players use the Sigma 8xxx series codecs and are priced new over $200. Some manufacturers are I-O Data, Buffalo, KISS, etc.
