  1. I have some AVI movies that are 1.4GB in size, and I'd like to reencode them to make them 700MB in size. What's the best way to do this? I don't mind changing the audio from AC3 to stereo, if that would help reduce space.

avirecomp or autogk or handbrake. load avi and set the output file size(change to 1-pass or 2-pass encoding mode to be able to set size), set the audio to mp3 or aac.

  4. For the sake of discussion, could VirtualDubMod be used to do the same thing? If so, what bit rate should be entered ( to get 700MB final size)?

Click on the 'calc...' button to get a bitrate calculator, where you can enter more information about the filesize (and other details you want). Or just remember the equation: bitrate X running time = filesize.
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

Use a bitrate calculator like the one built into Xvid's config dialog. Universal to all video:

file size = bitrate * running time
