  1. Ive tried to back up my copy of Mac OS 10.5.6

I have two drives: Sony DW D150 A upper bay and a Pioneer DVD-RW 112D lower bay

using toast 9 in each drive ive tried to back up 10.5.6 three times. got verification errors on sector 1856912 and 1458704 and the first DVD that didn't verify I didn't keep the info.

so i tried burn w Disk Utility and it also had verification issue but didn't give out sector numbers

its intersting to note that on the Sony drive DU said "unable to burn 'disk 5' the drive failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media"

I rarely use DL media and this media is:

    DVD+ R double layer write speed 2x RITEKD01

is my problem w inferior media? id this one of those layer cross over issues?

can you suggest media that might be better?

as I say I rarely use DL media but would like "reliable" back up of the OS before I install it.

    cheers and thanks

There are almost no vendors of good DL media. If you aren't using Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden, expect these types of troubles.

To improve your chances in the meantime, try burning at reduced speed. It sometimes helps, but the only real solution is to use good media, which Ritek unfortunately isn't.

  3. I thought it was the media.

Ill try to get the minimum of verbatim and try again.

I alway try the slowest speed on DL

  4. I am guessing IMGBURN could be used?

If these are TDK +R DL's I've had good luck with them.

Regrettably, no. Imgburn is a windows app; this is a mac subforum.

As for TDK, they used to make good stuff, but now most of it's crap. There are rumors that they still run some material through the good factory, but there's no easy way to tell in advance what you're getting. If you don't want to roll the dice, go with Verbatim/T-Y.

    That's not the problem.
The problem is TDK no longer manufacturers their own media. Now they re-brand junk from CMC.
