MKV Subtitle

I have video MKV format when I try to extracted the subtitle it gives me the this:

file has no recognised subtitles tracks


the video was rmvb format then I converted to AVI then MKV


what should I do?

Are you sure it contain soft subtitles and not permanent/hard subtitles?
And if you made the mkv yourself did you then add a subtitle track to the mkv?

'Soft' subtitles are separate streams in a video, and can be turned on or off at will. 'Hard' subtitles are encoded into the video itself - becoming a part of the video data - and can't be turned on or off.

I'm guessing your subtitles are encoded into the video itself, especially since you converted from RMVB - and I don't think RMVB supports external subtitles/subtitle streams. (I could be wrong, though.)


(Baldrick: Should the hard/soft subtitle terms be added to the Glossary? I don't know what words/phrases should be used to 'activate' them in posts, though. )

There are utilities that will attempt to OCR subtitles from hard-subbed sources, but it takes a bit of work (from both the program and the user), and I don't know how well they work, as I've never tried it. You might experiment with AVISubDetector and Subrip (I can't remember if there's an OCR utility included in the VobSub package), but those may require you to use an AVI stream to attempt to read the subtitles.

An alternate (easier ) option would be to search for the subtitles online.
