I've recently reformatted my computer and decided not to use 10 different pieces of encoding software like I used to, and just try to stick to one. I'm currently using Virtualdub 1.8.8 (I believe that's the newest stable one) and I've also been using the current official release of ffdshow tryouts, beta 6. I've come across a video that's encoded with the H264 codec. I have h264 codec enabled in the VFW configuration. I have no problem loading it, and it will play, but there will be nothing but a black screen. I know I could easily rid this problem by using SUPER, but I'd rather stick with one encoder and I'd like to do it with Virtualdub if possible.

    any ideas?

    thanks

Have you tried playing the same file in other players
    (MPC, VLC, even WMP)

Anyway, it's not impossible that you have found an AVI without a video stream.

Very common problem. Try using AviSynth's DirectShowSource().

    No, it's only an encoder.

The latest versions of x264VfW are able to decode as well.

    thanks for all the responses!

I have no problem with my KM player playing the file.

If using Avisynth means more work than just using a plug-in or downloading and installing something, (which it looks like) I think i'll pass. Scripting looks too time consuming

I've downloaded the x264vfw found on this site and the unofficial one from Sharktooth. Which one should I try first? I'm at work and won't be able to try it until I get home.

I have a few of the VD plugins. I don't have the quicktime, MP4, flash video or direct show. Wonder if they would make a difference?

i'll try these out later and let you know the result!

The QT plugin could be the one you need. I suggest installing all of the VD plugins (except for MP4 which conflicts with QT).

Thanks for that. Getting rid of the MP4 plugin fixed problems I was having with MP4 files.

I'm not sure about the container...I think it's an avi??

thanks for the heads up about the QT and MP4 conflict. Very useful.

If I can't respond within the next day (i'm moving tomorrow) I'll make sure it's some time next week.

I got rid of all of the Virtual Dub MP2 and MP4 plugins and now it's worse than before. I don't even get it to the point of the black screen. Ii now get a red window that says "unable to initialize Quicktime qtml" What did I do, delete too much? This is really a pain.

Is it something to do with the quicktime.ini file? What should mode be set to? I've edited it four times now
