Just got Philips DVP5990/F7 from a local Walmart, date of delivery: 02/20/09.
Looks the same as DVP5990/37, would it take the same firmware?
Even though it's listed, there are no fimware updates for this model on the official Philips site.

It turned out to be exactly the same as DVP5990/37 - took the same region hack and firmware![]()

I bet you were more than a little nervous though when upgrading.Originally Posted by toshik
At least you could have just returned the F7 for a new one if you bricked it.
Just curious, did you have to change the .bin file name to DVP5990_F7 for it to be recognized?
No, it took it as it was.Originally Posted by philips599037
how much was it in Walmart? I didn't see it being listed on their website. All the local Best Buys have it on back order, /37 that is.
... and I assume you did firmware upgrade and everything is working as expected?
Yes it does work all the way.Originally Posted by twister6
It's not listed on the web, I think it's from 57 to 59 dollars.
What is the /F7? I just bought one from Walmart last week for $57. It was from new stock they just received
and it was a /37.
I used to plug a hard disk into the USB port on my PS3 to play movies. Never again.
The DVP 5990 just does such a better job.

The picture for the DVP5990/F7 is a DVP3982/37 which makes no sense at all. I wonder what the difference is between the 5990/37 and the F7.Originally Posted by handyguy
From the picture it seems that the buttons are different. The buttons for the 5990/F7 seem to be the same as my 5960. The 5960 has a separate button for upscaling. The 5990/37 does not. It does it automatically and it sometimes misses the mark and you have to go back into the setup screen to reset it.

Where are you finding a picture of it?Originally Posted by cal_tony

Called the local store and they have plenty it instock, although the guy on the phone wasn't sure if its /37 or/F7 which sounds like the same thing anyway. Off to buying it
I may have not understood your previous post but I just clicked on the Philips site you listed and looked at the pictureOriginally Posted by philips599037
that was shown. That picture looked like my 5960 and not my 5990/37
So that what I was referring to.

Walmart doesn't have it listed on their website, but they do sell it in the store. Display model says 5990/37, while the box has a barcode label with 5990/F7. Just bought it (they only had 2 left in my local Jersey store, $57), opened it up at home, and the DVD player says 5990/37. Weird... Either way, enjoying my movies now from USB stick, yeah!!!!!!!!
Hi all, i have a question, as im new to some of this stuff. I just bought a dvp5990, and i hooked up my external harddrive to it to see if i could listen to music or watch a movie that is on it, but when the files come up on the screen, i click on a certain folder, and when i go into, say "My Music" it doesnt show any of my music or anything. just a folder option that when i click on it, it brings me to the previous page. is my music and movies in a wrong format? how can i tell? i really would like to be able to use it! any help would appreciate! thanks!
External hard drive needs to be FAT32 format, not NTFS.
By the way, buy.com has 5990/5992 refurbs for US$35 with free shipping.
hey, i have another question...sorry so many, im just new to all this, and am curious. i downloaded a few comedy central stand up comedians off of amazon unbox, and i go to play them thru the usb drive but it says audio codec not supported. is that bc it is a protected file? is there any way i can bypass that and still play it?
oh and my external is indeed FAT32, i checked. im wondering if it is because i have so many files on my external that it is exceeding the "file and folder limits" i mean i have over 10,000 songs and lots of pictures. maybe thats why? if it is, is there any way i can get by that? or make the "limit" larger? appreciate the help!
I'm not sure about the file and folder limts. There are a few other threads here about the 5990 and 5992. You might look through them. There is also a thread about a modified version of the firmware which has many improvements. One of the biggest is much longer file names from disc and USB.
