I read in the other thread that many North American players downconvert from 576i to 480i before upconverting to 1080. That would explain why a friend says he gets a better picture from the 480i recordings I send him than from the 576i recordings that someone else made.

Does anyone know for a fact that the european versions of these players convert directly from 576i to 1080 or do they also first downconvert to 480i before upconversion so as to make use of the same chipset?

I would think if your in PAL country that if you put in a NTSC DVD it would just go from 480 to 1080.

Are you saying if a PAL DVD player takes a 480 dvd upconverts it to 576 and then from 576 to 1080?

Anyway you might want to look at OPPO DVD players

    http://www.oppodigital.com/

Also take a look at Philips DVP599o and Philips DVP5992 both units are the same just have different colors.

No, I'm asking if the player upconverts a PAL DVD directly from 576i to 1080?

I have already but Oppo is not a realistic option where I live.

I author a lot of discs. If they look better upconverted from NTSC I would prefer to author them in NTSC. If they look better upconverted from PAL, I would prefer to author them in PAL.

    I'm with you.
To me it's freakin' absurd to try to ascertain stuff like
do european players convert directly from 576i to 1080 or do
    they downconvert to 480i first
    ...especially when beauty
